Back to the old days

Commuting around a big city, you may get lost in the bustling crowds or the sky-high buildings. But if you stop for a moment and take a look around, you may still be able to find some quiet places with old phoenix trees, crusted glazed tiles and skilled craftsmen. Then you can be taken back in time to the old days.

Beijing

Shishahai

When you think of Shishahai, the first thing that comes to mind is Gongwangfu. As the biggest siheyuan (traditional courtyard house) in the world, Gongwangfu was once the residence for the royal children during the Qing dynasty. So it is not difficult to imagine how grand and gorgeous this place is. Touring this old house, you may also feel you have become a member of this big family. Shishahai is also a cozy place to wander around. There are many old lanes in which people can walk without worrying about the busy traffic. If you feel tired you also can call for a tricycle to take you for a tour.

Another place worth checking out is Yandai Sideling Avenue. This area has a long history, immersed in traditional arts and culture. There are many craftsmen showing their skills. You can find a person making sugar figures with his skilled hands, which may recall your childhood memories.

Not far away from Yandai Sideling Avenue is Gulou. As one of the oldest but best-preserved buildings, the red Gulou can tell you a grand story happened in the past years.

Shanghai

Xujiahui Road

One hundred years ago, Xujiahui Road was originally named Huashan Road. And now it is the only access from Jingan Temple to Xujiahui. There are many old but still grand buildings which make the royal old Shanghai reappear. The most famous construction on Xujiahui Road is Dingxiang Garden. Built during the Qing Dynasty, this garden has witnessed much of China's turbulent history. Although times have changed, the beautiful view remains. The classical pavilion, bridge and clear brook create a relaxing atmosphere.

Other ancient spots include Zhenliu Mansion and Baiyang Jiuju which once were the residences for two famous actresses of old Shanghai. Walking around in these places, and you may see scenes in black and white images, like the old movies.

This road also has many other old but classical western-style buildings, which now have become the residences for the wealthy. Strolling through the neighborhood, you can feel the mixture of East and West from long ago.
